The Composting Project

Project Head: Leah Clayton

The Composting Project has been instrumental in expanding access to composting throughout Yale and beyond. Recently, our we showcased our efforts at the New Haven Faxon Law Race, where we helped to sort waste and save tons of materials from being disposed of incorrectly! We are eager to meet students interested in learning more about composting and to help expand the project's work.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions, please email the project head (leah.clayton@yale.edu) and she will get back to you shortly!

The Environmentalist

Project Head: Molly Hill

The Environmentalist is an undergraduate publication centered on sustainability and environmental topics, broadly defined. Our mission is to foster interdisciplinary discourse on, analysis of, and engagement with sustainability and environmental issues at Yale - and beyond. To do so, The Environmentalist engages student writing ranging from long-form essays and analytical pieces to environmental humanities and photography. In addition to publishing work from across the College, we maintain a dedicated team of writers on staff to craft opinion pieces, book reviews, and climate stories. Check out our latest pieces!

If you have questions, please email the project head (molly.hill@yale.edu) and she will get back to you shortly!

Researching and Writing

Plastic NEST

Project Head: Paloma Lenz

Plastic NEST (Nexus of EcoSocial Thought)revalorizes plastic and plant "waste" and mimics nature's regenerative principles to explore material properties. We use our hands and imagination to construct environmentally harmonious creations, from teacup frog keychains to cattail-wrapped domes. If you are interested in supporting the project, please donate your clean polypropylene (#5) plastic and sign up here.

Yale Student Energy Association

Project Head: Sena Sugiono

The Yale Student Energy Association is the premier student-led energy organization on campus. We’re the hub for energy-related student life on campus. We focus on building friendships and preparing you for a career after Yale. Our events include field trips, resume-building and interview prep workshops, career fairs, and social meet-ups. We also send students to the Yale Clean Energy Conference, the All-Ivy Sustainability Career Fair, and the annual Yale Clean Energy Collaborative Gala. We also provide opportunities for self-starters to design and lead their projects through connections with the Center for Business and the Environment at Yale, the Office of Sustainability, the Office of Facilities, and the Yale College Council. YSEA is also affiliated with the Energy Studies program—the only student organization to be affiliated with an academic program—bridging your studies with the non-academic elements of university life.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions, please email the project head (sena.sugiono@yale.edu) and he will get back to you shortly!

Equitable Bikeshare at Yale (EB@Y)

Project Heads: Jenny Liu, Anna Oehlerking

The Equitable Bikeshare @ Yale (EB@Y) is a student-run pilot project with the long-term mission of introducing sustainably-sourced, free-of-charge bike fleets to all of Yale's 14 residential colleges. EB@Y is a collaboration between the Yale College Council and the Yale Student Environmental Coalition. Recognizing that past bikeshare has been very capital-intensive and contained financial barriers that might otherwise keep students from participating, EB@Y seeks to redefine what it means to have a "bikeshare" on Yale's campus. Centering student leadership, sustainable procurement of bicycles, and free-of-charge rentals, EB@Y hopes to instigate a thriving bike culture at Yale University. Beyond promoting student health, prioritizing supply chain sustainability, and helping Yale students explore parts of New Haven they wouldn't otherwise, EB@Y hopes to create a large conversation about the importance of alternative transportation and safe streets in the City of New Haven.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions, please email the project heads (jenny.liu@yale.edu or anna.oehlerking@yale.edu) and they will get back to you shortly!

Project EnCOR

Project Head: TBA

Project EnCOR aims to create an Environmental Culture Of Responsibility among the arts community at Yale. We believe that the arts – performance, visual, written, and others – can be catalysts for environmental change as they challenge us to be more thoughtful and compassionate humans. We also believe that artistic institutions must be leaders, modeling best practices for the rest of the community. In our inaugural year, we held an environmental poster fundraiser that donated over $1000 to CoralVita, hosted GreenFest, a performance art festival for environmental justice, and invited five experts in the sustainable fashion industry for a panel and workshop. Join us if you believe that nature deserves an encore and that art has the power to change!

If you would like to get involved or have any questions, please email one of our members (rose.hansen@yale.edu) and she will get back to you shortly!

COP Delegation

Project Head: Saskia Braden

The Conference of Parties (COP), otherwise known as the United Nations Climate Change Conference, is an annual gathering of government delegations, industry leaders, NGOs, and academics from across 197 nations. The COP is where global action to stabilize greenhouse gas emissions is coordinated, along with other measures needed to avert climate and environmental catastrophe. The UN Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) was signed in 1994 and COP members have been meeting every year since to assess progress toward limiting emissions. Recent COPs have been shaped by youth and Indigenous activists' calls for urgency and justice in response to world leaders' failure to meet their pledges, resulting in worsening climate impacts that are already affecting vulnerable nations and populations disproportionately.
